Welcome to our first blog post. We wanted our first topic to be about something important to us, something meaningful and from the heart. The subject is Gratitude. But first… a bit of history.
We started Grass Roots Lawn and Landscaping about 10 years ago. It was an unlikely business choice for the two owners. My husband Dana, was a grocery manager at Giant Food for 30 years. My son Chris is a graduate of VCU with a degree in communications but was working for Nabisco at the time. Neither had ever started their own business.
They began by working for Dana’s brother Steve, who has an existing lawn care business in Northern Virginia. After working a year with his company and taking classes they felt ready to strike out on their own.
We were nervous as we put almost all of our savings into a brand-new truck, trailer, and commercial equipment. I was scared, I am the classic “glass half empty” type. I could only envision no steady income, not enough customers, long hours of hard physical work, no free time, no profit, and numerous other pitfalls ahead.
They are both more positive and fearless. The “follow your dreams” type. The dream of starting your own business and being your own boss. They have the entrepreneurial spirit.
That was 10 years ago, and it has worked out well. Just like any job, there are good days and bad days. Most days are long and tiring. But it feels good to know you are providing a service and jobs and doing it all with honesty and integrity.
We thank God every day for our blessings. We are by no means rich, but we have our health to be able to work and earn a living, along with a close family to come home to. We have so many things for which to be thankful. There are many people that without their love and support, we would not have a successful business today. I’d like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to those people.
First, to Steve Lyon. Thank you for giving Dana and Chris their start in lawn care and your continued support.
Thank you to our family for your help and encouragement. You are always there anytime we need you and not afraid to get dirty.
Of course, we want to thank all of our Grass Root’s employees, past and present. You are some of the best people out there and every day you show up and work hard. Our teams are the heart of Grass Roots and we literally could not do this without you.
Most importantly, we want to thank all of our customers. We are truly grateful that you have entrusted your lawns to us. Thank you. Without all of you there would be no Grass Roots. Our gratitude knows no bounds.
